National Geographic 5,000 Awesome Facts, 2015

This fact has actually changed as of 2023 from 2015 according to Wikipedia for there are now 2,670 named islands in Alaska.

What constitutes an island? First, an island is a body of land surrounded by water and is smaller than a continent. They are found in oceans, seas, rivers and lakes.

There are 6 different types of islands; continental, tidal, barrier, oceanic, coral and artificial. The are categorized by the different processes it takes to make, which are volcanic eruptions, sediment deposition or glacier retreats.

A group of islands are called archipelagos. Smaller islands are called isles, but they sometimes are so much the same that they are considered synonyms of each other.

I tried to find if there was a definite width or height they had to be but to no avail!

The smallest island is 1.23 acres named Simping Island, but it’s not in Alaska. It’s located in Singkawang Selatan Sub-District. I just wanted to throw that in.

A nissologist is somebody who studies islands, which is something I did not know.

It seems as if Alaska is keeping on top of naming their many islands that help make Alaska the largest state in the United States.

I think it would be cool to be able to name an island. Especially after yourself. I’m sure owning your own island and naming it is quite costly. Just ask Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, and Steven Spielberg, who all have private islands. That would be so nice. I could just imagine how much land and water Charley Waffle would have to run and swim and invite her friends. That would probably be her paradise. There she is pretending she’s on one;
