“Danitsja, a sloth living at a RESCUE CENTER in Suriname, learned to be POTTY TRAINED. (She’s since been released back into the wild.”

National Geographic Kids, 5,000 awesome facts, Fact #6

A conservationist, Monique Pool, acquired a three-toed sloth from a lady named Danitsja (hence the name) when it was found scared and clinging to her back yard fence post. She took it into the rescue center but because she believed the sloth had been domesticated due to her filed down claws (toes) and her extreme ease around humans, the sloth was put in the bathroom away from the other sloths. She was surprised when the sloth crawled down out of it’s perch and slowly went to the bathroom toilet to do its thing, even flipping the lid open.

When sloths go to the bathroom they will crawl down their tree, or perch, and do this little potty dance (called the poo dance) at the base of the tree where they wiggle their butt twice, once to dig a hole and another wiggle to cover it, and then crawl back up into the trees.

Danitsja also learned within two weeks how to go to the bathroom like regular sloths.

She ended up getting returned to the wild after being at the rescue center for a year as soon as they found out she was pregnant. They wanted her baby to live in the wild like sloths are supposed to.
