“A SMARTPHONE APP called AIRPNP helps you find the closest BATHROOM in a city then RENT its use. Fees range from $1 to $100.”

National Geographic 5,000 Awesome Facts, fact #19 on toilets

The AIRPNP was started by Travis Laurendine in New Orleans when he found out toilets were banned on the Mardis Gras parade route.

What started out as somewhat of a whimsical thing, it ended up supplying a need to many bathroom seekers during events like festivals and street parties, or even touring the town of Antwerp in the U.K. It became a thing in 2014, where people could “rent” out their bathrooms for free or for rent. https://fleximize.com/articles/005130/airpnp-the-airbnb-for-toilets.

It was a little bit like the AirBNB app, where people rent out their spaces for people looking for reprieves or for a get away. Reviews of the bathrooms were left, and even things like “nothing below 4-ply” listings were available. (http://fleximize.com)

Now there are other apps that are available on Android and IOS that help locate restrooms available to use.

Flush is a bathroom locator which can be used all over the world, and can be told if there is a fee or if they are free to use.

Charmin has an app called Sit or Squat that also works globally. You can rate it as a “sit” if the review is positive, or “squat” if it’s a negative experience.

Bathroom Scout has more than 1.3 million toilets and bathrooms all over the world with listings in public along with those attached to a pub or a restaurant. It’s has a navigation system that is built into the app so there is no need to switch over to a map app. The map app works with Android and IOS.

Then there is The Great British Public Toilet Map that is an interactive map. Instead of downloading an app, just head over to the main site and there will be a full breakdown of all local bathrooms near you. (bathroomcity.co.uk)
