“The World Toilet Association – that works to bring SANITATION to DEVELOPING COUNTRIES – has deemed November 19 as WORLD TOILET DAY.”
National Geographic 5,000 Awesome Facts, Fact # 12 on toilets
The World Toilet Association is an “international organization dedicated to protecting lives through the improvement of sanitation via toilets.”(withwta.org/home) Considered a taboo topic, toilets play a crucial role in daily life, hygiene and proper sanitation.
They had an Inaugural General Assembly that was held in Seoul, Korea on November 22, 2007 and hosted participants from 66 countries, including “government officials in the fields of sanitation and public health….and other international organizations and industry experts.”
Also known as the World Toilet Organization, which was founded on November 19, 2001, and is a non-profit global organization that is committed to improving toilet and sanitation conditions worldwide. (https://worldtoilet.org) They have “lobbied governments, public and private sector stakeholders and the international community to prioritize sanitation in the development agenda.”
It wasn’t until July 24, 2013 when 122 countries co-sponsored a UN resolution that was tabled by the Singapore government to designate 19th day of November as World Toilet Day.
They state that more than 297,000 children annually, which is more than 800 a day, under the age of 5 die from diarrhoeal diseases due to poor sanitation or hygiene, and from drinking unsafe water.
People must realize how crucial sanitary disposal of waste water is “both for the health of the community and its dignity as well.” (withwta.org/home). If the waste of people from infectious diseases are disposed in an unsanitary manner than the community’s water supply will become contaminated as well.
Cholera, dysentery, typhoid and other diseases can be reduced by sanitary waste disposal.
Basically, having a good toilet system is detrimental to the health of everybody around. Toilets shouldn’t be a taboo topic, but one that should we should all pay attention to and realize that we all need to use one to keep everybody safe.

NOVEMBER 19TH, WORLD TOILET DAY!
